The second named storm of the 2011 Atlantic hurricane and tropical storm season formed late yesterday off the coast of Florida close to Grand Bahama. Tropical Storm Bret was named after a depression was briefly classified as tropical depression 2.
Bret is forecast to keep well away from the Florida mainland and head to the northeast. Currently the storm sits just north of Grand Bahama, is drifting south-southeast and carries sustained winds of 45mph. Some additional strengthening is forecast and Bret could achieve winds of 60mph but the storm is likely to have travelled northeast, away from the Bahamas before that happens.
The Bahamas are likely to receive a few inches of rain as Bret drifts around to the north of the islands. There is a slight risk that Bret could recurve as it heads away from Florida, which does tend to happen occasionally with storms which form close to land, although forecasters say it is unlikely in this case.
