The 2011 Atlantic tropical storm and hurricane season doesn’t officially begin until the 1st June, but already meteorologists are closely watching an area north of the Leeward Islands where a wave has formed which they say has the potential to develop into a tropical disturbance.

Colorado State University have just issued their updated 2011 Atlantic tropical storm and hurricane season forecast, so in the interest of fairness (as we’ve already covered Accuweather’s and Tropical Storm Risk’s) here are the details.

So it’s the 30th of November, the final day of the 2010 Atlantic tropical storm and hurricane season, so time to take a brief look back at the season just gone. Despite being extremely active, with 19 named storms, the 2010 hurricane season will be best known for the lack of U.S. mainland impact.

Several Caribbean island states have received payouts from the Caribbean Catastrophe Risk Insurance Facility (CCRIF) for damages caused by the passage of tropical storm / hurricane Tomas earlier this month.

The UK’s Met Office says that its scientists have made a major breakthrough in forcasting the number of Atlantic tropical storms. The Decadal Climate Prediction System (DePreSys), developed at the Met Office is said to predict storms years ahead of the current season.

The 2010 Atlantic tropical storm and hurricane season has certainly proved to be as active as the forecasts suggested it would be even without the volume of landfalling events that were forecast. We’re currently up to 19 names storms this year and some forecasters are suggesting that we can expect more.
