Reinsurer Munich Re has announced its initial estimate of their claims burden from the earthquake event in Japan on March 11th. They provisionally estimate that their losses from the devastating earthquake and tsunami could total as much as €1.5 billion after retrocession and before tax.

Swiss Re has issued a press release announcing its initial estimate of its claims costs from the recent Japanese earthquake and tsunami events. They estimate their claims, net of retrocession and before tax, at $1.2 billion and point out that this figure is subject to a high degree of uncertainty as events unfold.

Data required to identify whether losses will be borne by some of the catastrophe bonds exposed to the Japanese earthquake disaster is not available at the moment. This is hindering risk modelling firm efforts to calculate index values and determine losses on the exposed cat bonds.
