Aon Benfield’s catastrophe model development arm Impact Forecasting, have published their July 2011 Monthly Cat Recap report which looks at the natural catastrophes that occurred over the course of the month around the world.

Here’s some interesting weekend reading for extreme weather buffs courtesy of Dr. Jeff Masters from the Weather Underground. Dr. Masters has put together a review of the severe weather events which affected the world during 2010 and also discusses 2011 events such as the severe weather recently experienced in the U.S.

The Mexican government have announced that they have completed the purchase of over $400m (4.8 billion pesos) of natural disaster insurance to help protect the country from events such as hurricanes and earthquakes. The insurance policy will provide cover for public infrastructure and low-income housing units according the government.

Insured losses from natural catastrophes are rising as the world becomes more developed and economic growth increases, particularly in developing areas of Asia, says insurer Allianz in a new report. The average annual cost of insured claims from catastrophes has risen eight-fold, from $5 billion in 1970 to $40 billion in 2010.
