A new report from analysts at J.P. Morgan has suggested that while the catastrophe bond market has witnessed exceptional growth in 2026, insurance-linked securities (ILS) and alternative capital are looking more disciplined, exhibiting few of the undisciplined behaviours witnessed in the last soft market.

Speaking this morning during an earnings call, Munich Re’s CFO Andrew Buchanan gave the clearest explanation for why the global reinsurance company has reduced its retrocessional protection considerably, saying the company puts the effort into underwriting so it can keep the risk and has the financial strength to warehouse it.

Strong U.S. annuity sales have driven a surge in reinsurance sidecar formations, with total ceded reserves climbing to over $90 billion in 2025, a notable increase from $64 billion in 2024, and $55 billion in 2023, rating agency AM Best has reported.

As data center exposure continues to grow, it is placing significant pressure on the insurance industry to address these challenges. In light of this, Jason Bolding from Gallagher Securities has emphasised that the growth will require a blend of traditional insurance, reinsurance, captives, catastrophe bonds, and sidecars to effectively fill the widening protection gap.

Speaking this morning during the SCOR earnings call, CEO Thierry Léger commented on the potential for wildfire catastrophe bonds to support European re/insurers, saying that the quantity of ILS will only increase with the quality of the modelling and as there is greater understanding of the influence of climate change on the wildfire peril.
