2017 Atlantic tropical storm season

Tropical storm Harvey has reformed in the Gulf of Mexico as a depression and is now expected to intensify on its track towards the Texas coastline, potentially reaching hurricane strength by landfall and with forecasts suggesting torrential rainfall will strike the region.

Tropical weather forecasters at the Weather Company have increased their forecast for 2017 Atlantic tropical storm & hurricane season activity, citing a warming Atlantic ocean and climate models that increasingly lean towards La Nina conditions during the peak of the Atlantic hurricane season.

The tropical Atlantic is forecast to see activity levels of greater than 130% above average over the next two weeks, according to forecasters from the Colorado State University. The CSU team highlight a number of possible tropical storm or hurricane threats as we approach the peak of the 2017 Atlantic hurricane season.

The U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration has upped its forecast for the number of tropical storms and the number of major hurricanes that could occur in the 2017 Atlantic tropical storm and hurricane season, saying that “the season has the potential to be extremely active,”  perhaps becoming the most active since 2010.

Tropical storm Franklin is expected to have intensified into hurricane Franklin, the first hurricane of the 2017 Atlantic tropical storm and hurricane season, before it makes its second landfall on the Mexican coastline.

Hurricane season forecasts for the Atlantic basin have risen again, as two of the main tropical weather teams maintain and increase their predictions that the 2017 Atlantic tropical storm and hurricane season will see above average levels of activity, just as tropical storm Franklin threatens Mexico.

Colorado State University (CSU) tropical weather forecaster Philip J. Klotzbach has increased his prediction of expected activity from the 2017 Atlantic Tropical Storm & Hurricane Season, calling for 15 named storms and 8 hurricanes this year.

Tropical storm Cindy was named yesterday, as the third official storm of the 2017 Atlantic Tropical Storm & Hurricane Season, and has intensified to now carry 60mph sustained winds with torrential rainfall and flash flooding now a threat across areas of the U.S. Gulf Coast.

Forecasters are now doubting the arrival of El Niño conditions during the 2017 Atlantic Tropical Storm & Hurricane Season, which is causing the forecasts for hurricane activity to rise again. Meanwhile, the tropical season kicked off with the naming of tropical storm Bret yesterday, while another disturbance also threatens the Gulf Coast this week.

The latest forecast to be released for the 2017 Atlantic Tropical Storm & Hurricane Season joins others in suggesting a more active season, with a greater number of hurricanes likely to form over the coming months, as Colorado State University forecasters also increase their predictions for landfalling storms on the U.S. coastline.
