Dolly becomes a hurricane; takes aim at Texas/Mexico border area

Dolly, the fourth named storm of the Atlantic storm season, has now gained in strength and become a hurricane. The category 1 storm packing 80mph plus winds is bearing down on the Texas/Mexico border region bringing with her a storm surge of between 4 to 6 feet above normal and carrying the potential for 6 to inches of rain (with isolated amounts up to 15 inches).

Areas potentially right in her path include Bronwsville, South Padre Island and Harlingen, however Dolly is expected to slow in forward motion and strengthen further prior to landfall later today so she has got the potential to wobble up coast (or down) a little. A hurricane warning remains in effect for the coast of Texas from Brownsville to Corpus Christi and for the northeastern coast of Mexico from Rio San Fernando northward to the border. These areas are the most likely to see any significant damage.

Dolly has also had a profound effect on oil and gas production within the Gulf of Mexico with many refineries and rigs cutting back on production and some shutting down completely.
