The International Finance Corporation (IFC), part of the World Bank Group, has signed new agreements with three partner index-insurance schemes in Africa to help expand access to microinsurance products for farmers and livestock herders. The schemes aim to help farmers and herders protect their crops and livestock from weather risks and natural disasters.

Progress is being made by the International Association of Insurance Supervisors (IAIS) and the MicroInsurance Network (MIN) in an ongoing discussion looking at how best to regulate organisations involved in the distribution and provision of microinsurance and microfinance initiatives.

Allianz has really nailed its colours to the mast with regards to microinsurance and are thoroughly embracing the potential for it to turn into a huge market. It’s certainly true that those who venture into the microinsurance marketplaces first stand a very good chance of securing a good sized chunk of the business.

Microfinance has not to date proved to be the most commercially viable area to expand into for many large insurers however that is changing and as regulation improves, technology is developed and the idea becomes more accepted it is beginning to be looked on as an area of potential growth and opportunity.

An project called Food Early Solutions for Africa (FESA) has been working on validating a microinsurance product for African farmers which will use satellite technology to measure drought conditions. This allows them to create an index against which a microinsurance drought product can be triggered.
