Hyperion adds capital markets expertise with Shumway hire

Hyperion Insurance Group, the global insurance and reinsurance broking, advisory and underwriting company, has hired Mark Shumway, an executive with capital markets and ILS advisory expertise, to its Hyperion X unit.

Hyperion has been steadily adding reinsurance and capital markets expertise, with broking capabilities now ranging across traditional and collateralised markets, and capital markets related expertise building at the firm.

Mark Shumway has joined the firm as Head of Strategic Advisory at Hyperion X.

Shumway was most recent employed by reinsurance broker JLT Re as the firm’s Global head of Strategic.

He also had a role as a representative of JLT Capital Markets, the insurance-linked securities (ILS) structuring and M&A arranging arm of the firm, which has seen him gain experience in ILS structuring and work alongside teams delivering collateralised reinsurance transactions and structural innovations such as private catastrophe bond deals.

Prior to his time at JLT Re, Shumway worked at reinsurance broker Guy Carpenter, where he held the role of Head, Strategic Advisory Asia Pacific.

Before he moved to the reinsurance broking world, Shumway held roles at rating agency A.M. Best and consulting firm KPMG.

Hyperion is building out a capital agnostic broking and advisory team with capabilities to help clients access traditional and alternative reinsurance capital.

The company first hired Nick Griffiths from RFIB to its RKH Reinsurance Broking unit, then Dave Saxton from Steadfast Re was added.

Market leaders from across the reinsurance broking, analytics and capital markets are now being hired as the company builds out its platform to service the reinsurance and ILS space, with the analytics offering of Hyperion X set to provide a significant differentiator versus some competitors.

In joining Hyperion Shumway comes back together with former colleague David Flandro, who the company recently hired as its Managing Director, Analytics at Hyperion X.
