1. Catastrophe bond issuance hits $9.4bn after active Q2 2018: Report
   Our latest quarterly report on the catastrophe bond and insurance-linked securities (ILS) market is now available to download. The report, ‘Q2 2018 – Sponsors and investors show commitment to ILS’, analyses a bumper second-quarter featuring $5.15 billion of issuance, which drove the outstanding market to a new high at $35.3 billion.

2. Reinsurers react as “new normal” renewals disappoint: Willis Re
   Reinsurance firms are reacting to the realisation that there is a “new normal” in property catastrophe reinsurance pricing, according to Willis Re, as they faced the reality at the mid-year renewals that rate momentum is disappearing and some accounts came out as much as -7.5% down.

3. Stone Ridge hits $7bn of ILS assets under management
   Stone Ridge Asset Management’s mutual ILS funds experienced slower growth in terms of insurance-linked security (ILS) and reinsurance linked assets under management in the last quarter of record, but the manager has hit a new milestone as its ILS assets reached $7 billion.

4. Hertelendy joins Credit Suisse ILS as Head of Reinsurance Investments
   The Credit Suisse Insurance Linked Strategies Ltd. team has hired Paul Hertelendy, previously at French reinsurer SCOR, to the senior roles of Head of Reinsurance Investments and Deputy Head of Insurance Linked Strategies.

5. Cat bonds hit $35.3bn risk capital outstanding, up 14% in 2018 so far
   The outstanding market for catastrophe bonds and related insurance-linked securities (ILS) has experienced impressive growth in 2018 so far, growing by 14% across the first half of the year, to a new record size of $35.3 billion.

6. Aon’s portfolio broking & facilities business open to ILS markets
   Aon’s newly formed Global Portfolio Broking team, part of the Aon Reinsurance Solutions business, will look to the capital markets and ILS funds as sources of capacity where appropriate for backing facilities business and portfolios of risks.

7. Forecasters expect fewer hurricanes due to cooler Atlantic in 2018
   The Colorado State University tropical weather forecasting team led by Phil Klotzbach has reduced its forecast for 2018 Atlantic hurricane season activity, citing “much colder than normal” sea surface temperatures as the reason for expecting fewer named storms and hurricanes this year.

8. ILS fund manager assets near $100bn thanks to 2018 capital raising
   Insurance-linked securities (ILS) fund manager assets have continued to grow in 2018, however the rate of growth has slowed in the second quarter as ILS funds had already raised significant new capital following the 2017 catastrophe losses and around the January renewals.

9. ILS gains more ground at mid-year 2018 reinsurance renewals
   The insurance-linked securities (ILS) market and non-traditional or alternative sources of capital gained more ground at the mid-year June 1st and July 1st 2018 reinsurance renewals, as equivalence of coverage increased while ILS capacity began to expand its remit once again.

10. Cat bond values recover from 2017 drop, as rates-on-line stabilise: Lane Financial
    The value of an investment in a reference market index of catastrophe bonds has now recovered all of the decline caused by 2017’s hurricanes and catastrophes, while at the same time rates-on-line have stabilised somewhat following a drop earlier this year, according to Lane Financial.
