    Reinsurance firms are reacting to the realisation that there is a “new normal” in property catastrophe reinsurance pricing, according to Willis Re, as they faced the reality at the mid-year renewals that rate momentum is disappearing and some accounts came out as much as -7.5% down.

    The Colorado State University tropical weather forecasting team led by Phil Klotzbach has reduced its forecast for 2018 Atlantic hurricane season activity, citing “much colder than normal” sea surface temperatures as the reason for expecting fewer named storms and hurricanes this year.

    Insurance-linked securities (ILS) fund manager assets have continued to grow in 2018, however the rate of growth has slowed in the second quarter as ILS funds had already raised significant new capital following the 2017 catastrophe losses and around the January renewals.

    The insurance-linked securities (ILS) market and non-traditional or alternative sources of capital gained more ground at the mid-year June 1st and July 1st 2018 reinsurance renewals, as equivalence of coverage increased while ILS capacity began to expand its remit once again.

  10. Cat bond values recover from 2017 drop, as rates-on-line stabilise: Lane Financial
    The value of an investment in a reference market index of catastrophe bonds has now recovered all of the decline caused by 2017’s hurricanes and catastrophes, while at the same time rates-on-line have stabilised somewhat following a drop earlier this year, according to Lane Financial.
