As the catastrophe bond market pipeline builds for the fourth-quarter of 2026, we are already tracking what will be only the second ever year where issuance of 144A catastrophe bonds and private cat bond deals has exceeded the $20 billion level, while currently the market remains on a faster issuance pace than 2025.

A survey of 105 institutional investors across the DACH-region undertaken by the German association for alternative investments, shows that an increasing number of allocators in the region are choosing catastrophe bonds and insurance-linked securities, while more indicate they intend to enter the sector.

As casualty sidecars continue to gain traction, rating agency AM Best has highlighted that clear exit mechanics, high-quality collateral, and transparent risk transfer are critical to lowering tail risk capital charges for sponsors, warning that uncertain exit terms or weak collateral can leave cedents holding unexpected residual risk.

Speaking earlier today during Hannover Re’s Baden-Baden media briefing, Patrick Horstmann Managing Director, and Head of insurance-linked securities (ILS) at the firm, emphasised that the German reinsurer sees ILS capital as a sustainable addition to the global reinsurance market and a key area of growth for the company.
