Demonstrating the continued profitability of reinsurance underwriting businesses in 2026, global giant Munich Re has preliminarily reported its third-quarter net profit will be higher than consensus at €1.7 billion, on which basis the company has raised its full-year profit guidance by €300 million.
Munich Re said today that the third-quarter of 2026 saw strong financial performance for the company, resulting in a net profit projected to be €1.7 billion, much higher than the analyst consensus estimate of €1.479 billion.
The reinsurance company has delivered “pleasing operating performance across all business segments,” Munich Re explained.
This has been helped by major losses being below expectations for its P&C reinsurance business, while investment results have also been strong.
Munich Re, like the other large re/insurers can be expected to report in their Q3 results, further demonstrates the benefits of operating a large, globally diverse insurance and reinsurance underwriting operation.
The profit target beat shows how the business model can remain a very profitable venture in an environment where major loss experience remains low, despite the recent steep price declines that are being seen in the softening market environment.
In times when underwriting results remain strong but the market is softening, major reinsurers tend to take the opportunity to bolster their reserves.
Munich Re seems to be highlighting this today, saying that subject to major loss activity it “intends to continue strengthening its balance sheet where appropriate in the fourth quarter.”
The net result will now reach €5.7 billion for the first nine months of this year for Munich Re.
As a result, with this above the previous target that was expected, Munich Re has now raised its full-year 2026 profit target by €300 million, from €6.3 billion to €6.6 billion.
Munich Re’s performance shows how reinsurance profits continue to flow, helped considerably by the fact major loss activity has remained below averages year-to-date.
This reads across positively for reinsurance strategies in the insurance-linked securities (ILS) market as well, where performance also remains attractive despite the softening of property catastrophe rates.
Munich Re was already running at record levels of profit after the first-half of this year, although at that stage it maintained its earlier full-year target. But now with the US hurricane season running so far loss-free, this has likely been one factor that gives the reinsurer the confidence to lift its guidance.
