The Life & Longevity Markets Association (LLMA), a not for profit association dedicated to promoting liquidity in the traded longevity and mortality risk markets, has announced their latest member reinsurer Munich Re. The largest reinsurer in the world takes membership of the LLMA to 12 they said yesterday.

Munich Reinsurance America Inc. are actively marketing the second catastrophe bond in the Johnston Re series of deals. As with their 2010 Johnston Re cat bond, the deal provides U.S. hurricane cover for Munich Re America for a reinsurance agreement they have with two North Carolina non-profit insurance associations, the North Carolina Joint Underwriters Assn. The Cayman Islands Stock Exchange has delisted the two tranches of Munich Re’s $267.7m (€170m) catastrophe bond Queen Street Ltd. after the deal matured without any losses. Maturities are a feature of the first half of this year with a total of $4 billion of cat bonds scheduled to mature by the end of Q2.

Rating agency Moody’s has downgraded the notes of catastrophe bond Muteki Ltd. today as they believe the deal will be triggered (which we suggested was possible earlier) and they expect a total loss of principal to investors in the transaction. Munich Re has listed the notes of its recently closed $100m Queen Street II Capital Ltd. U.S. hurricane and European windstorm catastrophe bond on the Bermuda Stock Exchange. This will please Bermuda which is seeking to grow its share of the global catastrophe bond market by offering attractive listing terms to issuers.

In the midst of the uncertainty surrounding the events in Japan, the catastrophe bond market will be encouraged to see the announcement from GC Securities that they have successfully helped Munich Re complete their latest catastrophe bond transaction. GC Securities have been involved in three cat bond transactions during Q1 2011.

Reinsurer Munich Re has announced its initial estimate of their claims burden from the earthquake event in Japan on March 11th. They provisionally estimate that their losses from the devastating earthquake and tsunami could total as much as €1.5 billion after retrocession and before tax.
