The global cyber insurance market is expected to benefit from a growing pool of available reinsurance capital to cover cyber risks in 2024, with insurance-linked securities (ILS) and catastrophe bonds one of the solutions expected to expand in use, modeller CyberCube has said.

DeNexus, a specialist provider of cyber risk quantification tools and software, has announced the hiring of George Mawdsley as the firm’s first Head of Risk Solutions, joining from his most recent role at ILS manager Securis Investment Partners.

After Beazley pioneered the first privately placed cyber catastrophe bonds, it has been “pleasing” to witness recent cyber cat bond market developments, as the first 144A transactions came to market, Paul Bantick, Global Head of Cyber Risks at Beazley has said.

Over the next two decades, as the cyber insurance and reinsurance market grows, there is the potential for cyber insurance-linked securities (ILS) volumes to reach $100 billion, equalling where catastrophe risk in the capital market sits today, according to Mike Millette, Managing Partner at Hudson Structured Capital Management Ltd., and Board Member at CyberCube.

Envelop Risk’s Capital Markets business continues to gain traction and the firm is close to deploying capital markets capacity via its Augmented Re Class 3A Reinsurer, says Co-Founder and Chief Executive Officer (CEO), Jonathan Spry.

While Beazley’s CEO said earlier this year that underwriting property risks is a “moving feast” because of climate change, the re/insurance company has not shied away, writing 63% more in property premiums so far this year in what it calls “exceptional” market conditions.

Beazley, the London headquartered specialty insurance and reinsurance underwriter, is at an advanced stage of planning for its first full Rule 144a cyber catastrophe bond, with an issuance expected by year-end to tie in with the maturity of its private cyber ILS deals and its cyber reinsurance renewal for January 1 2024, Artemis has learned.

Speaking in Bermuda at the annual Convergence event last week, David Ross of data-driven cyber underwriting company Envelop Risk, explained that the cyber insurance-linked securities (ILS) market has a long-way to grow, given the size of the opportunity and the need for cyber risk capital.

Demand for cyber insurance and reinsurance is expected to continue to grow in the years ahead, but with carriers seemingly at the maximum of what cyber risk they can assume, transferring some of it to the capital markets will be crucial to achieve exponential growth, according to industry experts.

Speaking this afternoon during a renewals focused panel discussion hosted by Aon’s Reinsurance Solutions, Sven Althoff, Member of the Executive Board for P&C at Hannover Re, explained that introducing event-based wordings to cyber insurance could open the doors to broader capital markets and ILS involvement.
