2014 was a year full of firsts for the catastrophe bond market, helping cat bond issuance to reach a new record highs. But as well as breaking new ground the cat bond market shows signs of continuing maturation, according to the latest market report from Property Claim Services (PCS).

The recent CHF 70m ($71m) Leine Re private catastrophe bond transaction, which was issued through Hannover Re’s Kaith Re Ltd. segregated accounts company, was ultimately ceded by and benefits Swiss canton insurer Gebäudeversicherung Bern (GVB).

The Bermuda Stock Exchange (BSX) has passed another impressive milestone, reaching a massive $15.912 billion of insurance or reinsurance-linked listings of catastrophe bonds, ILS, sidecars and reinsurance investment funds on the exchange.

While the growth of collateralized and capital markets sourced insurance and reinsurance capacity has been particularly impressive in 2014, it is the expansion and diversification of the ways capital can source and access re/insurance risk that is most notable.

At a record level of $62 billion at the end of September 2014, alternative or non-traditional reinsurance capital makes up between 40% and 50% of global catastrophe reinsurance capital, or 12% of total reinsurer capital, according to Aon Benfield.

Fully-collateralized sources of reinsurance and insurance-linked securities (ILS) capacity continued to penetrate the global reinsurance market at the January 1st renewals as cedents increasingly add third-party capital to their reinsurance programs, according to broker Willis Re.
