2020 hurricane season

The 2020 Atlantic tropical storm and hurricane season is now forecast to have an 85% chance of “above-normal” levels of activity by NOAA, as the agency lifted its forecast for the season to call for an “extremely active” few months ahead.

Two of the main hurricane forecasting teams that we track here at Artemis have both raised their seasonal forecast numbers for the 2020 Atlantic tropical storm and hurricane season significantly, with more than 10 hurricanes now expected to form.

Recent tropical storm Fay, which took the record as the earliest F named storm in history as it targeted the U.S. northeast region, is estimated to have caused an insurance market loss of roughly $400 million by catastrophe risk modeller Karen Clark & Company (KCC).

Hurricane forecasts for the 2020 Atlantic tropical storm season have been elevated again to reflect the rapid start to the year in terms of storms already formed, while in addition there remains an above-normal landfall probability for the months ahead, forecasters note.

During the 2020 Atlantic tropical storm and hurricane season two regions to watch for above average levels of storm activity are the tropical Atlantic’s main development region (MDR) and the Gulf region, according to ILS investment manager Twelve Capital.
