James Slaughter, formerly of Liberty Mutual and recently linked with a start-up named Lavant, has been appointed Chief Underwriting Officer (CUO) of specialist Lloyd’s re/insurer Apollo Syndicate Management.
Slaughter is a recognised name in the insurance-linked securities (ILS) and reinsurance convergence space, having worked to establish many of Liberty Mutual’s initiatives in ILS over the years, including its Mystic Re series of catastrophe bonds and also having involvement in the development of its Limestone collateralised reinsurance sidecar vehicle.
He will join Apollo from April 6th and report to David Ibeson, group CEO. Nick Burkinshaw, Apollo’s current CUO, is set to retire.

Slaughter will lead Apollo’s underwriting teams and help to build its market leading innovation capabilities, with a focus on leveraging the opportunities of data science and digital transformation within the Lloyd’s of London market.
Slaughter has more than 23 years’ experience in the insurance and reinsurance industry, most recently as the CUO of Liberty Mutual’s Global Risks Solutions business unit where he oversaw more than $17bn in gross written premium.
Before that, Slaughter held a range of senior positions across Liberty Mutual and Liberty Syndicate Management.
