Atlantic hurricane season forecast to finish strongly

Share

Weather Services International (WSI) has updated its forecast for the remainder of the 2010 Atlantic hurricane season. They say that they were somewhat surprised that Julia and Karl both attained major hurricane status last week and that has drawn them to the conclusion that the forecast needs to be upped slightly.

WSI have increased their forecast for the number of intense hurricanes to form during the season by one, meaning they now expect six major storms greater than category 3 over the entire season. We’ve already had five storms of that strength so only one left to endure if the forecast is accurate.

Perhaps more worrying from this latest forecast is WSI’s prediction that the pattern for storms to recurve away from the U.S. coast may be ending. They say that the threat to the U.S. coast may be increasing as we go through the rest of the season.

You can keep up to date with all the storms on our hurricane season tracking page.
