RenaissanceRe’s CEO Kevin O’Donnell believes his firm is well-positioned to continue growing its insurance-linked securities (ILS) offering and doesn’t see the rest of the market as able to disrupt its strategy.

RenaissanceRe, the Bermuda based reinsurance and third-party capital management specialist, is working to bring investors in the AlphaCat Managers offering into its Capital Partners products, in the wake of the completion of the firms acquisition of Validus from AIG.

According to RenaissanceRe’s CEO Kevin O’Donnell, with the acquisition of AIG’s reinsurance businesses under the Validus brand now complete, the insurer remains on-track to invest $500 million into two of the RenaissanceRe Capital Partners vehicles.

Bermuda based reinsurance firm and third-party capital management specialist RenaissanceRe saw the fee income earned through its Capital Partners joint-ventures and ILS funds soar in the third-quarter, as management fees rose on the back of higher assets, while performance fees roared back in the period.

Speaking during the last earnings call for global reinsurance firm RenaissanceRe, senior executives highlighted the significant income contribution that fees from the insurance-linked securities (ILS) and third-party capital management business are now making.

Vermeer Reinsurance Ltd., the joint-venture and rated underwriting vehicle that RenaissanceRe manages on behalf of Netherlands-based pension investor PGGM and its end-client the Dutch pension PFZW, had a strong second-quarter, with almost $52.2 million of net income attributable to the backers of the company.

When Bermuda based reinsurance and third-party capital management specialist RenaissanceRe closes on its acquisition of the Validus reinsurance business from AIG, its CEO believes it will cede risk from the acquired company to investors in its ILS and joint-venture vehicles at a similar rate to how it operates today.

RenaissanceRe saw its third-party investor capital assets under management (AUM), dedicated to its property and casualty reinsurance business, rise by $250 million during the second-quarter of the year, to reach a new high of $6.85 billion.

The acceleration of activity in the catastrophe bond market in 2023, as cedent demand for covers in the upper-layers of their reinsurance towers has risen and the ILS market has responded to it, is seen as something that will positively benefit the bottom-line at RenaissanceRe.

RenaissanceRe has reported a significant year-on-year uplift in its fee income earned from third-party reinsurance capital and insurance-linked securities (ILS) operations, with the second-quarter 2023 seeing the total earned rise by 65.5% to $56.7 million.
