A significant aftershock has struck the northeast of Japan within the past hour. The earthquake was said to be between 7.1 and 7.4 on the richter scale, to put that into perspective it is about 1,000 times less powerful than the earthquake on the 11th March in the same region.

Bloomberg reports that Holcim, the second largest cement producer in the world, is going to offer catastrophe microinsurance to customers in developing countries and emerging markets as an additional sales tool giving them a way to mitigate some of the risks of constructing homes in catastrophe prone countries.

Reinsurer Munich Re has announced its initial estimate of their claims burden from the earthquake event in Japan on March 11th. They provisionally estimate that their losses from the devastating earthquake and tsunami could total as much as €1.5 billion after retrocession and before tax.

Risk Management Solutions has issued an estimate for the economic losses resulting from the disaster in Japan on the 11th of March. Their estimate includes the earthquake, tsunami, disruption to power supplies, evacuations and the ongoing issues relating to the crippled Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant.

Swiss Re has issued a press release announcing its initial estimate of its claims costs from the recent Japanese earthquake and tsunami events. They estimate their claims, net of retrocession and before tax, at $1.2 billion and point out that this figure is subject to a high degree of uncertainty as events unfold.
