Bermuda-domiciled special purpose insurer Sailfish Re Ltd. has issued a $30 million tranche of private catastrophe bond notes for an unknown sponsor, under a Koi Re Series 2025-1 issuance, Artemis has learned.

At Artemis’ ILS NYC 2025 conference, which took place in February, a panel of leading industry voices examined how the insurance-linked securities (ILS) market is responding to a higher-risk world, while maintaining performance and attracting institutional capital.

The catastrophe bond and insurance-linked securities (ILS) market is expected to see healthy demand from investors in 2025, but the firmness and trajectory of pricing in the sector, and more broadly in reinsurance, remains less certain, according to Mark Gibson of Schroders Capital.

A new roughly US $4 million private catastrophe bond has been issued, Artex Axcell Re (Series FE0001), and the notes of the issuance are denominated in Japanese Yen, suggesting it covers catastrophe perils in that country and likely provides a capital markets backed source of reinsurance to an unknown Japanese sponsor.

We’ve learned of another private catastrophe bond transaction brought to market through the Artex Capital Solutions managed Eclipse Re Ltd. vehicle, with a $5 million Eclipse Re Ltd. (Series 2024-8A) now the eighth private or cat bond lite issuance from this structure in 2024 so far.

Some investors have started to experience benefits from the outperformance of investments in the private reinsurance segment compared to catastrophe bonds, after softening of pricing had been seen in the second quarter, Pascal Koller Partner and Portfolio Manager at LGT ILS Partners Ltd., recently commented.

Toa Re Europe, the Switzerland-based European reinsurance arm of Japanese group Toa Reinsurance Company Ltd., has benefited from a full payout under its $25 million Silver Crane private catastrophe bond transaction, after the notes were triggered by industry losses from the Turkey earthquake event from early 2023, Artemis has learned.
