Catastrophe bond investment funds in the UCITS format have continued to deliver strong returns for their investors through October, with the average 2025 year-to-date return for these cat bond funds running at 8.88% by the end of that month, according to the latest data from the Plenum CAT Bond UCITS Fund Indices.

With some months now passed since the ESMA recommendation regarding the eligibility of catastrophe bonds within UCITS investment fund structures, Daniel Grieger of Plenum Investments has highlighted how national regulators are not all in agreement.

Plenum Investments AG, the Swiss based specialist manager of catastrophe bond and insurance-linked securities (ILS) funds, has experienced substantial growth in assets raised for its Plenum European Insurance Bond Fund, a UCITS investment strategy focused on the debt issuances of European insurers.

Continued strong seasonality lifted the average 2025 year-to-date return of UCITS catastrophe bond investment funds to 7.25% by September 26th, according to the latest data from the Plenum CAT Bond UCITS Fund Indices.

Seasonality related to the Atlantic hurricane season, alongside still strong baseline risk spreads and collateral return all helped to boost the average performance for the Plenum CAT Bond UCITS Fund Indices to a 5.79% return year-to-date, as of August 29th 2025.

Catastrophe bond funds in the UCITS format experienced their best month of 2025 so far in July, as seasonality kicked in and lifted the average performance for the Plenum CAT Bond UCITS Fund Indices to a 4.39% return year-to-date.

The cohort of lower-risk catastrophe bond funds in the UCITS format are still leading the way year-to-date in 2025, with an average 3.06% return to June 27th. But the higher-risk cohort of cat bond funds are now narrowing the gap, as impacts from wildfire and aggregate losses and mark-to-market adjustments move further into the past.

With UCITS catastrophe bond funds delivering positive returns to their investors for the month of May, it has helped to lift the trailing twelve-month return for the UCITS cat bond fund sector back to an average of 12%, according to the latest data from the Plenum CAT Bond UCITS Fund Indices.
