2020 Atlantic hurricane season

Hurricane Hanna, the first hurricane of the 2020 Atlantic tropical storm season, saw its sustained winds reaching 90mph before making landfall on the Texas coastline late yesterday. Post-landfall update towards the foot of this article.

Two tropical storms, Gonzalo and Hanna, each of which has broken records as the earliest seventh and eighth named storms to form of the Atlantic tropical storm and hurricane season, are threatening impacts in the coming days.

Recent tropical storm Fay, which took the record as the earliest F named storm in history as it targeted the U.S. northeast region, is estimated to have caused an insurance market loss of roughly $400 million by catastrophe risk modeller Karen Clark & Company (KCC).

Hurricane forecasts for the 2020 Atlantic tropical storm season have been elevated again to reflect the rapid start to the year in terms of storms already formed, while in addition there remains an above-normal landfall probability for the months ahead, forecasters note.

During the 2020 Atlantic tropical storm and hurricane season two regions to watch for above average levels of storm activity are the tropical Atlantic’s main development region (MDR) and the Gulf region, according to ILS investment manager Twelve Capital.
