Munich Re promotes Buisson to Head of Weather & Agro

Global reinsurance giant Munich Re has promoted Pierre Buisson to the role of Head of Weather & Agro, where he will be based in Zurich, and collaborate with the reinsurer’s clients across Europe to better understand, manage, and hedge weather-related risks.

Munich Re’s established weather team enters into weather derivative and other parametric risk transfer arrangements to help clients hedge their weather exposure.

Buisson, who has been with the reinsurer for five years, previously served as a Agro & Weather Senior Structurer, where his responsibilities primarily focused on underwriting, structuring and pricing weather and commodity-based products to help companies understand the management of their weather and commodity price exposure.

Before he joined Munich Re, Buisson spent several years working at Axpo Solutions AG, a core subsidiary of the Axpo Group, where he spent a couple of years serving as a Senior Analyst and Data Scientist, where he gained valuable expertise within developing long-term hedging strategies for energy markets and ad-hoc analyses to support trading decisions.

In 2020, Buisson was then appointed to the role of Head of Models & Core Markets at the firm, leading a team comprised of Quants, Market Analysts, and Data Scientists responsible for asset-backed trading models and market analysis.

“I’m delighted to share that I have recently taken on the role of Head of Weather & Agro at Munich Re in Zurich. After many years in energy markets, I am more convinced than ever that weather has become a key driver of economic outcomes. From demand and renewable generation to hydro availability, agriculture, and supply chains, weather increasingly shapes risk and opportunity across industries,” Buisson commented in a post on LinkedIn.

He continued: “Recent years of heatwaves, droughts, low river levels, and periods of low wind generation have highlighted just how sensitive our economies are to weather conditions. As the energy transition accelerates and weather variability remains a critical source of uncertainty, the demand for effective weather risk management solutions continues to grow.

“I look forward to leading our talented team and working with clients across Europe to better understand, manage, and hedge weather-related risks.”
