Experienced insurance-linked securities (ILS), insurtech and reinsurance convergence focused executive and lawyer Michael Halsband has moved firm to join McDermott Will & Emery as a Partner in its New York practice.
Halsband has worked across various areas of law, reinsurance and capital markets or ILS during his career, including most recently as a Partner at Drinker Biddle & Reath LLP.
He had worked in the legal sphere as North America General Counsel at Alea Group and insurance and corporate regulatory counsel at Centre Group, before then moving onto the reinsurance convergence and ILS space with roles at Goldman Sachs, Deutsche Bank and Sirius Capital Markets.
Halsband has broad experience in origination, structuring, execution and marketing of a range of ILS and catastrophe bond transactions, as well as the creation of third-party reinsurance capital platforms.
His transactional work has focused on complex structured reinsurance arrangements, insurance-linked securities (ILS), sidecar and catastrophe convergence fund formation and management, as well as distressed portfolio run-off administration and strategies. He has also advised clients on corporate and regulatory matters across reinsurance and more recently in insurance technology circles.
In addition he has significant experience in legal work for M&A, capital raising and insurtech start-ups.
Halsband joined McDermott Will & Emery this month, having left Drinker Biddle & Reeth.
McDermott already has a strong insurance and reinsurance focused legal practice, but the addition of Halsband’s expertise will help the firm to add new specialisms to its offering.
