Ledger Investing, the insurance technology (insurtech) and insurance-linked securities (ILS) start-up that aims to enhance the way re/insurers fund their risks using securitisation and tech, has added a new Advisor to its team.
Joining Ledger is Ian Gutterman, an investment and portfolio manager with over twenty years of experience managing complex asset class portfolios, largely focused on insurance and reinsurance industry participants.
Gutterman has worked for Fidelity Investments, Adage Capital Management and most recently for Balyasny Asset Management, where he managed an insurance and reinsurance sector focused investment portfolio and also worked on a start-up in the sector.
He joins Ledger Investing at a time when it is looking to build on the success of its first transaction, a deal that saw the firm securitizing a portfolio of non-standard passenger auto insurance between an MGA and the AIG-owned ILS fund manager AlphaCat.
As Ledger targets further transactions, Gutterman’s unique insights into how insurance and reinsurance firms are funded and manage their capital will be a valuable addition to the firm.
Samir Shah, founder of Ledger Investing, told Artemis, “We are focused on using securitization strategically to support growth and higher and more stable returns for insurers through more effective capital management (vs. the current market focus on reinsurance and risk management).
“Ian’s background and experience in evaluating insurers as an institutional investor, and his interactions with insurance leadership puts him in an ideal position to help insurers position securitization to achieve strategic objectives.”
Gutterman said that he is “proud” to have taken on an Advisory role at Ledger Investing and that he is excited to assist the company is it grows its business, working to “change the way insurers fund their growth.”
