This report reviews the catastrophe bond and insurance-linked securities (ILS) market at the end of the fourth-quarter of 2021, looking at new risk capital issued and the composition of transactions completed during the quarter, as well as market activity seen during the full-year.
For the full-year, we saw a record level of property catastrophe bond issuance, with over $12.5 billion of risk capital issued. Including cat bonds covering non-catastrophe risks, as well as private cat bonds we’ve tracked, Q4 issuance reached $3.2 billion and full-year 2021 hit a new record of $14 billion, surpassing the previous record set in 2020 by almost $2 billion, or 15%.
