Tropical storm Tomas (soon to be hurricane Tomas) poses late season threat to Caribbean

Update: For our latest on Hurricane Tomas please view this post.

The 2010 Atlantic hurricane season is proving to be one of the most unpredictable on record. Tropical storm Tomas formed yesterday, very far south for the time of year. It is extremely unusual to have such a large storm so far south this late in the season. Tomas, the 19th named storm of the season, will be hurricane Tomas within a few hours and is going to threaten the Caribbean.

Tomas is currently passing just to the south of Barbados, who can expect to feel tropical storm force winds and experience 3 to 5 inches of rain. After that Tomas will probably be a Category 1 hurricane and will head towards St Vincent and St Lucia, currently forecast to pass between the islands. On the current forecast track Tomas is likely to bring hurricane force winds to St Lucia.

After passing through the Leeward Islands hurricane Tomas will be over warm water and with low wind shear is expected to intensify and could become a powerful and large hurricane by Tuesday or Wednesday next week. At this stage it’s difficult to say exactly where Tomas will aim it’s fury but Jamaica is one island that is right in the middle of the forecast cone of uncertainty at the moment.

How powerful hurricane Tomas gets we won’t know for a couple of days but some forecasters are saying it could be an extremely dangerous storm. Keep track of hurricane Tomas on our 2010 Atlantic hurricane season page.
