TD 16 becomes tropical storm Nicole; direction now less certain

Share

As we predicted earlier, tropical depression 16 has now become tropical storm Nicole. However the rest of our prediction has become far less certain as Nicole has turned over Cuba and the National Hurricane Centre (NHC) forecast for the expected path of Nicole has changed quite substantially and become much less certain.

Nicole, now the 14th named tropical storm of the Atlantic season, is now forecast to pass to the south of Florida through the straits close to the Bahamas and emerge off the east coast of Florida at some time early Thursday morning. From there it’s not clear where she will end up.

Tropical Storm Nicole forecast path

Nicole was originally expected to pass across Florida, emerge into the Atlantic on the eastern side and then head north towards the east coast U.S. The NHC is now saying that they expect Nicole to merge with an extratropical low in the Atlantic. That doesn’t mean that the storm won’t drop significant amounts of rain should it make it to the east coast states though but it’s much more uncertain an outcome than it was earlier today.
