1. Further growth expected in 2018 as alternative capital hits $89bn: Aon Benfield
   Analysis from global reinsurance broker Aon Benfield shows that alternative reinsurance capital growth again outpaced traditional market expansion in 2017, underlining its growing influence in the market.

2. “Significantly” above average 2018 hurricane season forecast by NC State
   The 2018 Atlantic hurricane season is expected to feature significantly above long-term average levels of activity by researchers from North Carolina State University, who suggest that as many as 18 named tropical storms and hurricanes could form this year.

3. Stone Ridge expands investment in Lloyd’s corporate vehicle
   Alternative risk premia focused mutual fund manager Stone Ridge Asset Management has expanded its investment in a Lloyd’s corporate vehicle in recent months, reflecting an increasing ambition from the manager to access reinsurance linked returns through the key specialty re/insurance hub in London.

   The direction of insurance and reinsurance rates is a constant source of discussion and it’s beginning to seem that those ILS funds and reinsurers who look to shorten the risk-to-capital value-chain may benefit most, as rates are still rising in primary property underwriting business.

5. Leadenhall sources more risk through MS Amlin syndicate at Lloyd’s
   London-headquartered specialist insurance-linked securities (ILS) and reinsurance linked investment manager Leadenhall Capital Partners LLP sourced more risk from the Lloyd’s market thanks to its relationship with MS Amlin in 2017.

   The insurance-linked securities (ILS) market has continued its advance on global reinsurance markets, with no sign that there has been any impact to investor appetite following the major catastrophe losses of 2017, according to broker Willis Re.

   In 2018 we see the insurance-linked securities (ILS) market expanding further into new classes of risk, as evidenced by the emergence of a new transaction named Fidus Re Ltd. (Series 2018-1) which is a vehicle for transferring financial guarantee insurance risks to the capital markets.

9. Citizens returns with $200m Everglades Re II 2018-1 cat bond
   Florida’s Citizens Property Insurance Corp. returns to the capital markets for additional reinsurance with another catastrophe bond in the Everglades Re series of transactions, Everglades Re II Ltd. (Series 2018-1).

10. Arch returns with largest Bellemeade Re mortgage ILS to-date
    Bermudian insurance and reinsurance group Arch Capital has returned to the insurance-linked securities (ILS) market to source collateralized reinsurance for its mortgage insurance book, with its largest mortgage ILS transaction to-date, a $374.5 million Bellemeade Re 2018-1 Ltd. deal.
