Walkers Bermuda, a full service commercial law firm based on the island, has hired Sarah Demerling as a new Partner, bringing additional experience in insurance-linked securities (ILS) and reinsurance to the firm.
Demerling, who joins the Corporate, Finance & Funds Group at the law firm, is the third lawyer hire for Walkers Bermuda in the past three months.
Demerling has seventeen years’ experience working across financial services in Bermuda, with significant experience gained in asset management, investment funds and insurance-linked securities (ILS).
She has advised U.S., Canadian and UK lawyers, investment managers, banks, insurers, reinsurers and principals on all aspects of Bermuda corporate law, with a particular focus on the asset management and investment funds industry, as well as the ILS market.
Commenting on the hire, Jonathan Betts, Head of Walkers Bermuda’s Corporate, Finance & Funds Group said, “Sarah is highly regarded in Bermuda and her level of expertise and experience will further strengthen our Corporate, Finance & Funds bench. I know that she is very excited to be returning to private practice and we are delighted she has joined our team. It is a particularly interesting time given recent legislative changes in Bermuda relating to economic substance and our growing funds, ILS, regulatory and fintech practices.”
Demerling has also served as independent director to a number of companies to facilitate best practice in corporate governance, with experience covering funds, ILS, insurance (captives SPIs and ‘A’ Rated companies) and commodities.
Prior to joining Walkers Bermuda, Demerling worked as a Client Director at Estera Services (Bermuda) Ltd., prior to which she spent 14 years at law firm Appleby becoming a Partner in the firm.
Demerling also acts as an active member of the Asset Management Committee of the Bermuda Business Development Agency and worked closely with the Bermuda Government and Bermuda Monetary Authority in introducing changes to the Investment Funds Act.
