A strong performance and recovery in June as catastrophe bond spreads largely came back into line has helped the first-half 2024 average return of UCITS catastrophe bond funds reach 4.72%, according to the Plenum CAT Bond UCITS Fund Indices.

The combined assets under management of the main catastrophe bond funds in the UCITS format have now surpassed $12 billion for the first time ever, nearing $12.2 billion by the end of May 2024 and now having risen by over 11% so far this year.

Catastrophe bond funds in the UCITS format have experienced their first negative month of performance since October 2022, with the Plenum CAT Bond UCITS Fund Indices falling -0.30% in May 2024.

As spread widening in the catastrophe bond market accelerated in recent weeks, the Plenum CAT Bond UCITS Fund Indices recorded their first negative week since back in December 2022, ending a 73 week long-run of positive average returns across the tracked cat bond funds.

The European Securities & Markets Authority (ESMA) has now launched a formal call for evidence to support a review of the Undertakings for Collective Investment in Transferable Securities (UCITS) Eligible Assets Directive (EAD), including what assets should be eligible, with catastrophe bonds one class of assets named.
