US-headquartered insurance holding company W. R. Berkley Corporation has continued to expand its use of its Lifson Re collateralized reinsurance sidecar through the third quarter of 2025, with written premiums ceded to the sidecar rising 53% year-on-year to $482 million, the highest level the company has recorded to date.

W. R. Berkley Corporation, the US headquartered insurance holding company, has continued to make greater use of its Lifson Re collateralized reinsurance sidecar structure through the second-quarter of 2025, with written premiums ceded to the sidecar now up by 76% year-on-year for the first-half, at $362 million.

Having increased the capital base of its Lifson Re collateralized reinsurance sidecar structure and raised the proportional quota share for 2025, W. R. Berkley ceded a significant 82% more in reinsurance and retrocession premiums to the structure in the first-quarter of 2025.

The Lifson Re collateralized reinsurance sidecar structure is set to be even more valuable in 2025 to owner W. R. Berkley Corporation, the US headquartered insurance holding company, as the Lifson Re sidecar has been capitalised to a higher level for this year, while the quota share cession rate has also been increased.

Having seen the volume of premiums ceded to its Lifson Re collateralized reinsurance sidecar shrink during the first-half of this year, US headquartered insurance holding company W. R. Berkley Corporation caught up a little through the third-quarter, suggesting a change in timing may have driven part of the H1 decline seen.

Over the first-half of this year, US headquartered insurance holding company W. R. Berkley Corporation ceded fewer premiums to its Lifson Re collateralized reinsurance sidecar, despite the vehicle remaining the same size in capital terms for 2024.

The collateralized reinsurance capacity provided to US headquartered insurance holding company W. R. Berkley Corporation by its Lifson Re reinsurance sidecar vehicle grew in importance over the last year, but the company has kept its sidecar capital flat at $380 million for 2024.
