Global reinsurance firm Hannover Re has successfully sponsored a $13.75 million Cumulus Re (Series 2024-1) parametric cloud outage catastrophe bond that was privately issued and placed using the firm’s Kaith Re Ltd. vehicle, with modelling of the cyber risks undertaken by Parametrix.

Having shared over one billion Euros of large natural catastrophe and man-made losses with insurance-linked securities (ILS) investors in 2022, last year the figure fell considerably with reinsurance firm Hannover Re only sharing EUR 62 million in losses through fronted ILS arrangements in 2023.

Global reinsurance company Hannover Re has reported that large losses fell within budget at EUR 1.6 billion for 2023, as the firm’s property and casualty (P&C) reinsurance combined ratio strengthened to 94% in the period.

Hannover Re placed its K-Cessions quota share sidecar at US $757 million in size for 2024, shrinking the structure by 9% over the prior year. In an interview, Henning Ludolphs explained that despite some changes, the company has sufficient retrocession to take advantage of the hard reinsurance market environment this year.

The first private catastrophe bonds of 2024 have now come to light, as $59 million in Seaside Re private cat bond notes have been issued by Kaith Re Ltd., the transformer vehicle owned by global reinsurance firm Hannover Re.

All of the 2023 issued vintage of Hannover Re’s Seaside Re private catastrophe bonds have now had their maturity dates extended, Artemis has learned, taking the total extended to almost $139 million across the 2020, 2021, 2022 and now 2023 vintage deals.

Having significantly increased the amount of risk it cedes to retrocession partners at the start of this year, Hannover Re is now looking at the flexibility it has in the retro program and may opt to cede less to proportional retrocession partners next year, one of its Board Members said today.

A $15 million private catastrophe bond transaction covering California earthquake risks has come to market, with the LI Re (Series 2023-1) deal, issued by the Hannover Re owned Kaith Re vehicle, taking private cat bond issuance to almost $411 million year-to-date.

Extensions of maturity dates continue for $101.25 million of the 2020, 2021, and 2022 vintage Seaside Re private catastrophe bond transactions, allowing for ongoing development of catastrophe loss events that they are potentially exposed to.

German reinsurer Hannover Re has purchased a significant amount of retrocession protection in 2023, and while this has limited its growth appetite in the natural catastrophe space, the company has sufficient room to expand its appetite should opportunities present themselves, according to Sven Althoff, Member of the Executive Board, P&C, Hannover Re.
