Reinsurance and retrocession linked specialist ILS investment manager Markel CATCo Investment Management has continued to deliver higher investment fee income to parent Markel Corporation in the second-quarter, as the increased assets under management contributed 87% more revenue this year.

Markel CATCo Investment Management Ltd., the retrocession and reinsurance linked investment manager, has raised an additional $700 million of capital from its existing investor base to meet an increased demand for its products at the mid-year renewals this year, Artemis has learned.

Markel CATCo Investment Management Ltd. has strengthened loss reserves considerably for its listed retrocessional reinsurance fund, the CATCo Reinsurance Opportunities Fund, bolstering the reserves for 2017 catastrophe losses by another 19.5% of net asset value.

Financial services, insurance and reinsurance giant Markel Corporation has reported a significant 84% year-on-year jump in investment management fees generated by the reinsurance and retrocession linked ILS investment activities of its specialist manager Markel CATCo Investment Management.

While 2017 with its major catastrophe loss events resulted in significant impacts to reinsurance and retrocession providers, the experience served to, “demonstrate the importance of the global reinsurance market and highlight the ability of collateralized vehicles… to respond to global catastrophic risk,” according to Markel CATCo.

Markel CATCo Investment Management Ltd., the collateralized reinsurance and retrocessional investment fund manager, lifted its ILS assets under management to a new high of $6.1 billion by the end of 2017, which includes the collateral held to pay for incurred losses.

Due to the impacts of catastrophic events in 2017, the subsequent industry losses across reinsurance and retrocession and then the higher rates achieved at the January 2018 renewals, Markel CATCo’s listed retrocessional reinsurance fund, the CATCo Reinsurance Opportunities Fund, has a maximum portfolio return target 43% higher than it did last year.

Markel CATCo Investment Management Ltd. has strengthened loss reserves considerably for its listed retrocessional reinsurance fund, the CATCo Reinsurance Opportunities Fund, adding 14.4% of net asset value (NAV) for the California wildfires and another 3.6% of NAV for losses from 2017’s hurricanes.
