Leveraging third-party reinsurance capital, through its ILS and third-party capital manager AlphaCat Managers Ltd., can add as much as 200 basis points to Validus’ expected returns, according to the firm’s Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Ed Noonan.

Bermuda domiciled insurer and reinsurer Validus saw its share of income from AlphaCat Managers Ltd., its third-party capital manager, increase during the first-quarter of 2016 to $8.7 million, helping the firm grow its gross written premiums in the period.

The value proposition of an ILS and third-party reinsurance capital manager operated from within a global insurance and reinsurance group, such as seen with AlphaCat as part of Validus, is attracting investors to change their ILS manager, according to CEO of Validus Ed Noonan.

Growth in assets under management of $630m at AlphaCat Managers Ltd., Bermuda based insurance and reinsurance group Validus’ ILS and third-party capital manager, helped to drive strong premium growth and increased the re/insurers share of AlphaCat net income in 2015.

MLC Investment Management, a wealth and asset management unit of the National Australia Bank Group, has given a mandate to AlphaCat Managers Ltd. to manage insurance and reinsurance linked ILS investments for it.

The insurance-linked securities (ILS) market, for catastrophe bonds, collateralized reinsurance and other insurance-linked investments, is “rapidly approaching an equilibrium” in terms of pricing, supply and demand, according to Validus CEO Ed Noonan.
