Global asset management group Schroders has announced leadership changes at its specialist insurance-linked securities (ILS) unit Schroder Secquaero, as Stephan Ruoff takes on the Head Of role as planned and Dirk Lohmann moves into the newly created position of Chairman.
Stephan Ruoff, the former Tokio Millennium Re Group CEO, joined Schroder Secquaero almost a year ago as Deputy Head of the dedicated insurance-linked securities (ILS) business within Schroder Investment Management (Switzerland) AG.
Ruoff has significant underwriting and senior management experience across reinsurance and in insurance-linked securities (ILS).
As the former CEO of Tokio Millennium Re, which facilitated transactions and provided fronting arrangements for a large number of ILS managers, Ruoff has gained deep knowledge of the alternative capital market for reinsurance.
Ruoff was lined up as designated successor for Dirk Lohmann and now becomes the new Head of Schroder Secquaero, while Lohmann, a co-founder of the ILS investment management unit, has now stepped aside as planned into a new role that has been created for him.
Lohmann will stay with the organisation and become Chairman of Schroder Secquaero.
He co-founded Secquaero Advisors AG, the predecessor of Schroder Secquaero and has significant and broad reinsurance and ILS market experience.
As Chairman, Lohmann will continue to provide market intelligence and expertise to the Schroder Secquaero team, will serve as a member of the investment committee and also mentor the management team. On top of this, Lohmann will focus on developing new business opportunities and strategic ventures for the company.

Lohmann, Chairman of Schroder Secquaero added, “I wish Stephan all the best as my successor. I look forward to my new role as Chairman and supporting Stephan and the team going forward.”
Ruoff, Head of Schroder Secquaero also said, “I am very pleased with the opportunity to assume the role as Head of Schroder Secquero and I am very thankful to Dirk for his leadership and guidance in the last few months, as well as his continued support for the organisation. I am also convinced that with the changes we have implemented we are well prepared for the next stage of growth.”
In addition, Schroder Secquaero confirmed today that Flavio Matter, Senior Underwriter Non-life at the ILS manager, had been promoted last month to become Head of Origination.
The position will see Matter leading the now combined underwriting and transaction management teams at Schroder Secquaero. He originally joined Secquaero Advisors AG in October 2014 and has more than 15 years of natural catastrophe modelling and reinsurance underwriting experience.
Schroder Secquaero also recently hired Mark Gibson, a well-known UK based ILS and reinsurance convergence focused executive whose most recent role was at Neon.
Gibson has taken on the role of ILS Solutions Manager, based in London and will lead the coordination of activities related to new product development, expanding existing products and supporting the wider Schroders sales activities, whilst also representing ILS within asset manager Schroders’ London headquarters.
