CatIQ, Canada’s insured loss and exposure indices provider, has published a final insurance industry loss estimate of CAD $1.30 billion from the wildfires that impacted the Municipality of Jasper and Jasper National Park in Alberta, Canada between July 22nd and August 17th, 2024.

Insured losses from catastrophe events across the globe in the first half of 2026 are estimated to have reached $47 billion, significantly down on last year’s $100 billion, with severe convective storms (SCS) including hail, damaging straight-line winds and tornadoes, remaining the costliest insured peril on a global basis, according to broker Aon.

Chubb has been buying more reinsurance this year as it sees an opportunity to “feed the hungry” in the competitive and softened market environment, CEO Evan Greenberg said today. GC Securities, the investment banking and capital markets arm of reinsurance broker Guy Carpenter, worked on 20 catastrophe bonds in the first-half of 2026, totalling $5 billion of limit, a record for the broker, according to CEO Dean Klisura.

The global insurance and reinsurance market may be seeing improved profitability and premium growth, but global consultancy Bain & Company believes gains are “largely cyclical and mask unresolved challenges” while the future winners are expected to be those that lower the cost of risk and expand access to coverage.
