Mariah Re thunderstorm catastrophe bond issued under shelf program

We’ve heard from American Family Mutual Insurance Co. that their recent first foray into the catastrophe bond market may not be their last should they require further cover.

American Family created a shelf program of which Mariah Re Ltd is just the first issuance for $100m of U.S. thunderstorm cover. This leaves the option open for American Family to issue subsequent series of notes through Mariah Re under the current structure should they require it.

Creating a shelf program is a sensible move for first time issuers as it leaves them open to utilise the same structure again without as much up front cost. We hope to see American Family returning to the cat bond market in the not too distant future.
