Challenger Life’s cat bond investments meet benchmark. Calix Re adds new dimension

Challenger Life reported that its insurance-linked securities (ILS) investments, predominantly catastrophe bonds, performed in-line with their benchmark over the last year, while the company also launched a new Bermuda life and annuity reinsurance entity named Calix Re, adding a new insurance-linked dimension for the company.

challenger-life-logoChallenger Life is a large Australian life and retirement income underwriter and investor and has been allocating to catastrophe bonds and some other ILS instruments such as reinsurance sidecars and life settlements, for a number of years.

Catastrophe bonds have been repeatedly cited by Challenger as a driver of attractive relative returns, with the firm once citing cat bonds and ILS as the highest returning asset class relative to the capital requirements needed to support them.

After the first-half of its financial year, Challenger had reported that its ILS investments beat their benchmarks in the six months to December 31st 2025.

Now, having reported its full financial year results, as of June 30th 2026, Challenger reports that its cat bonds have continued to perform in-line with their benchmark, for which it uses the Plenum CAT Bond UCITS Fund Index, which it noted helped to offset weakness in other areas of its alternatives portfolio.

With its life settlements allocation now completely wound down and its reinsurance sidecar investment having dwindled to only an AU $3 million valuation by the middle of this year, the catastrophe bond investments are the main ILS allocation for Challenger at this time.

Challenger reports the value of its catastrophe bond investments at AU $735 million as of June 30th 2026, which has increased from AU $714 million as of December 31st 2025.

So the investor has benefited from positive returns in the last six months and while Challenger noted the seasonality can make comparisons of six month periods harder, on a fiscal year basis the cat bond investments helped to offset lower yields on other fixed income securities in its portfolio.

Which shows the investor continues to appreciate the return profile and diversification that the catastrophe bond allocation delivers for its overall portfolio returns.

The total value of the ILS and reinsurance investments, the cat bonds and small remaining sidecar holding, rose from AU $725 million at December 31st 2025, to AU $738 million at June 30th 2026.

In US dollar terms, this means the total insurance-linked strategies allocation of Challenger Life rose from just under US $482 million at the end of last year, to a new valuation of just over US $508 million at June 30th 2026, with the catastrophe bond investments the sole driver given the sidecar investment declined in value slightly (this may also be in run-off).

The insurance-linked securities allocation still makes up around 20% of Challenger Life’s alternatives bucket of its portfolio.

The cat bond and small sidecar investment make up around 2.8% of the total AU $26.65 billion investment portfolio.

Interestingly, Challenger has added a new insurance-linked dimension to its platform in recent months, having launched a Bermuda based Class E reinsurance entity named Calix Re Ltd.

Calix Re Ltd. operates as a kind of self-capitalised reinsurance sidecar-like entity for Challenger Life, a way to bring additional capacity to support its partnership with MS&AD company Mitsui Sumitomo Primary on life and annuity risks, it seems.

Calix Re is expected to support product innovation in life and annuities reinsurance for Challenger, while creating opportunities for new reinsurance partnerships with offshore insurers in Japan, the company explained.

In addition, Calix Re is expected to drive a source of diversified earnings including capital light fee income, so this shows another way Challenger is putting its capital to work in the market to derive insurance-linked returns.

The plan is to ramp up Calix Re in 2027 and this move serves to demonstrate the attraction annuity reinsurance has, for diversified investment and life entities at this time, which is underscored by the wave of sidecar structures we’ve seen launch in recent years.

Challenger Life is just one of the numerous pension fund and major institutional ILS investors we track in our directories here.
