5. Cyclone Debbie strikes Queensland, threat woke up live cat market
   Severe tropical cyclone Debbie struck northern Queensland in recent hours, with a landfall featuring 260kph wind gusts, storm, surge and torrential rain. A catastrophe has been declared for the region, but in the hours prior to landfall re/insurers were preparing for the impact and sources suggest the live-cat market woke up. Tentative early estimates suggest an industry loss close to 2011’s Cyclone Yasi, which could be as much as AU$1.4 billion.

6. Sompo steps into ILS with Blue Capital, as Endurance acquisition completes
   Sompo Holdings has now completed its acquisition of Bermudian insurance and reinsurance group Endurance and as a result becomes the owner of specialist catastrophe insurance and reinsurance linked investment manager Blue Capital Management Ltd.

7. Cyber risks and government pools. Too soon?
   With penetration of cyber risk re/insurance increasing and seen as a huge opportunity for the market, questions turn to how best to back-stop the growth of this emerging line of business, with the help of government support or through private initiatives, including using the capital markets?

8. Lloyd’s hopes to revisit Index for ILS players at end of year
   Lloyd’s of London still aims to attract more alternative capital providers and products into the market by the end of 2018, as its interim milestones remain unchanged, and will revisit the Index featuring loss ratios and data on the insurance market’s performance, at the end of this year, Inga Beale said today.
