Arcus 1856 hires head of North America property treaty from Markel

Arcus Syndicate 1856 at Lloyd’s, which is backed by third-party funds under the management of the Credit Suisse insurance and reinsurance linked investment strategies team, has hired Nick James from Markel to become its underwriting manager for North America property treaty reinsurance.

arcus-1856-syndicate-logoJames had been working at Markel International as managing director, property treaty and a senior property treaty underwriter, having joined the firm in 2011.

Before that, he was a property treaty reinsurance underwriter at Ace Tempest Re, having joined the firm in 2008.

He has also spent 10 years in the broking sector working at Guy Carpenter from  1997 and Aon from 2003 as an international property treaty reinsurance broker.

Commenting on the hire, Adrian Gfeller, managing director, Arcus 1856, said, “We are delighted to announce Nick’s appointment. He brings over 20 years of experience in the property treaty reinsurance sector.

“Having worked both as an underwriter and broker during that time, he has great technical knowledge coupled with a clear understanding of the needs of brokers and insureds.”
