Alternative capital driving greater options for insurance buyers: Aon

The expansion of alternative and institutional capital alongside traditional reinsurance is helping expand program choice for insurance buyers, according to broker Aon’s Q3 2026 Global Insurance Market Insights report.

aon-logoIn its report, the broker underlines that abundant capacity, and strong insurer competition continues to support favourable conditions for buyers across most major lines and geographies.

However, the broker states that what is fundamentally changing is the nature of the capital supporting the market, along with the risks demanding its attention.

According to Aon, strong reinsurer balance sheets and favourable treaty renewals are being supplemented by committed, multi-year institutional and alternative capital, giving clients more options to structure their insurance programs and access capacity.

“Capital is changing shape, and that matters more than the headline pricing numbers. Strong reinsurer balance sheets and favorable treaty renewals have supported capacity this year. Alongside that, we have seen steady growth in committed, multi-year capital from institutional and alternative sources, sitting directly alongside the traditional market. This diversification creates a deeper and more stable capital base – one that is more resilient to future shifts in market conditions,” Aon’s report reads.

“For clients, the practical effect is choice: more sources of capacity and more ways to structure a program than were available even a few years ago. It is also reshaping the conversation at the underwriting table. As more capital competes for well-managed risks, clients with strong data and a clear narrative can be more deliberate about who they partner with, and on what terms.”

The broker emphasises that the choice extends heavily beyond traditional insurance, with clients increasingly turning toward captives, structured solutions, parametric products and other alternative risk transfer options for extra flexibility.

At the same time, these solutions can also help organisations manage volatility and align risk financing more closely with their broader business goals.

While catastrophe activity has been relatively benign in 2026, which has helped to contain claims volatility and also contributed to softer property market conditions. Aon’s report cautions that lower losses do not mean underlying exposures have diminished.

The broker also highlights that digital infrastructure and AI are creating new risk considerations. This shouldn’t be too surprising given the on-going data centre expansion, which is increasing demand for insurance capacity across construction, commissioning and operations.

As we’ve said in previous articles, the global data centre build-out is heavily pushing traditional insurance capacity to its limits, which in turn presents a key opportunity for the capital markets.

Earlier this year, Swiss Re Institute indicated that AI data centres and renewable energy infrastructure alone could generate around $200 billion in insurance premiums between 2026 and 2030, who also outlined how this opportunity creates a clear role for alternative reinsurance capital, particularly in regards to catastrophe bonds and sidecars.

Furthermore, Aon’s report also highlights how the property insurance market has continued to soften throughout 2026,  driven by abundant capacity, favourable reinsurance conditions and intensifying competition among insurers for quality risks.

“Well-performing, well-managed risks across the U.S., UK, Latin America and Pacific markets have achieved double-digit pricing reductions, with even greater reductions in India. Competition is extending beyond price, with insurers seeking greater participation and lead positions while offering increased limits, broader coverage and more flexible terms,” Aon said.

“The underlying market dynamics reflect strong reinsurer balance sheets, favorable reinsurance renewals and continued appetite from both traditional and alternative capital providers, enabling insurers to deploy additional capacity across most industries. However, the market remains highly differentiated by risk quality. Loss- impacted and natural catastrophe-exposed risks and higher-hazard occupancies continue to face greater underwriting scrutiny and more measured pricing relief, although increased capacity is improving options even for some challenging risks.”

Importantly, Aon’s report underscores that regional conditions remain heavily inconsistent across the property market.

Japan continues to face increasing pricing pressure, whereas the rate reductions in China has slowed down as insurers focus more on profitability due to recent regulatory adjustments.

In general, the market has transitioned from a state of limited capacity to one of competitive capacity, with the most significant benefits going to risks that can showcase strong loss performance, effective risk management, and a reliable dedication to risk improvement.

Christian Hoffman, CEO of Commercial Risk, Aon, commented: “Favorable market conditions give clients an opportunity to strengthen their risk programs, not simply reduce cost.”

Hoffman added: “Clients can use better exposure data to test limits and retentions and consider where savings can be reinvested to build greater resilience. Strong data and a clear understanding of risk remain critical to achieving the best outcomes. As the market continues to evolve, clients should be looking at the choices available to them across both traditional and alternative sources of capital.”
