Swiss Re - Details
Global reinsurance firm Swiss Re began managing third-party alternative sources of capital in 2007 through its sidecar platform.
The Sector Re sidecar vehicle is now a regular feature of the insurance-linked securities (ILS) market, as a multi-investor, quota share ILS structure.
The Sector Re collateralised reinsurance sidecar grew to around $1.1 billion in the second-half of 2019.
The reinsurer also manages internally a portfolio of catastrophe bonds.
In 2019, Swiss Re expanded its activities with its first dedicated sidecar structure for a third-party investor, the more than $500 million Viaduct Re structure for Dutch pension fund investor PGGM.
Swiss Re launched a new unit Alternative Capital Partners (ACP), with a direct reporting line to the CFO in early 2019, with a mandate to develop investor relationships and establish the best capital mix for its overall company structure.
Since the beginning of 2019, Swiss Re’s alternative capital under management has grown from just over $1 billion to $3.2 billion, as of Jan 2022.
As of Sep 2021, this consisted of approximately $1.9 billion in Swiss Re’s sidecar platform and $1 billion in its internally managed catastrophe bond portfolio.
Swiss Re Insurance-Linked Investment Management Ltd.
In November 2020 Swiss Re set up Swiss Re Insurance-Linked Investment Management Ltd. (SRILIM), a FINMA authorised asset manager for investment funds.
Swiss Re also established a dedicated fund company named 1863 Fund Ltd., a Bermuda registered fund company, and the Core Nat Cat Fund, which is just the first investment fund to be launched under 1863 Fund Ltd.
This is the first ILS fund to be directly managed by Swiss Re as the reinsurer expands its strategy of bringing third-party investor capital into its underwriting business, to support its strategy for natural catastrophe growth.
