Loss Portfolio Transfer

Transfer of an insurance portfolio where amount transferred reflects the total expected cost of unpaid losses. This is a type of alternative risk financing, where a reinsurer assumes and takes on the existing open and future claim liabilities of an insurer, via the transfer of the insurer’s loss reserves. This enables the insurer to remove liabilities from its balance sheet.
