Swiss Re Insurance-Linked Investment Advisors Corporation (SRILIAC), a registered investment adviser subsidiary of global reinsurance company Swiss Re, is taking on co-investment management duties for the range of catastrophe bonds and insurance-linked securities (ILS) funds offered by global asset manager GAM.

The proposed acquisition of GAM Holding AG, parent company to GAM Investments and home to one of the largest catastrophe bond fund strategies, by specialist fund management group Liontrust has failed to win the necessary investor support, with the GAM Board now turning to discussions with the rival investor group NewGAMe.

The importance of the Fermat Capital Management catastrophe bond funds to global asset manager GAM Investments has become abundantly clear, with disclosures related to the GAM Holding acquisition by Liontrust suggesting Fermat is responsible for as much as 21% of the assets and revenues of the firm.

GAM Holding AG, the parent company to global asset manager GAM Investments, is to be acquired by specialist fund management group Liontrust, with all of its investment funds set to be rebranded, which will presumably include its large GAM Star Cat Bond Fund and other ILS strategies it manages.

During the third-quarter of 2021, global asset manager GAM Investments benefited from continued inflows to its flagship catastrophe bond fund strategy, which is managed by insurance-linked securities (ILS) specialist Fermat Capital Management.

Catastrophe bonds may not be for everyone. They’re sophisticated assets and lower returns have reduced their attractiveness for some, of late. But the ability of the ILS asset class to deliver consistent, relatively stable returns with low-correlation over the longer-term, remains a key driver of interest.

Independent asset management group GAM Holdings announced its first-half results today, reporting net new money inflows of approx $1.43 billion and 5% growth in assets over the period, with its catastrophe bond fund strategies contributing strongly.
