TigerRisk Partners, the reinsurance broking, risk and capital management firm founded by Jim Stanard and Rod Fox, has appointed James F. Dowd, one of the founders of reinsurer Odyssey Re, to lead TigerRisk’s development of and expansion into international reinsurance markets.
“Jim will bring to TigerRisk his 40 plus years experience in all facets of the insurance/reinsurance industry,” commented Rod Fox, CEO. “He will lead the initiative to expand our international footprint, at first in Asia, and subsequently into other regions of the world. He will also assist our team in business development, as well as deliver advisory services to clients and prospects.”
James Dowd’s most recent roles saw hi serving as Chairman, President and Chief Executive Officer of Fairfax Asia. In this role Dowd and his team extensively expanded Fairfax’s non-life insurance activities across Asia.
Dowd began his career in the insurance industry in 1971 as general counsel at Skandia America Group where he worked his way up to become CEO in 1984. From 1993 to 1995 he was Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of reinsurance broker Willis Re. He is probably best known in the international reinsurance markets as one of the founders of Odyssey Re, a highly successful reinsurer which is now an important element of the Fairfax organization.
“I’ve known and respected TigerRisk’s founders Jim Stanard and Rod Fox for a long time,” said Mr. Dowd. “The progress they’ve made in just five years has been extraordinary. TigerRisk offers a fresh perspective and clear voice within the industry. The quality of its people is extraordinary. The idea of joining such a dynamic company is very exciting.”
TigerRisk has a specialism in data and modelling backed placement of catastrophe reinsurance programs, often using alternative reinsurance instruments such as industry loss warrants, and is seemingly agnostic on capacity reinsurance is placed with, selecting the best-fit sources of capital for the specific client. It is also involved in placement of casualty risks business. TigerRisk has built a strong business in the U.S. as a specialist broker and it will be interesting to see how it’s expansion into other territories succeeds.
