MS Amlin Underwriting Limited, the Lloyd’s insurance and reinsurance arm of MS Amlin and part of the Japanese MS&AD group, has announced the appointment of a new Chief Underwriting Officer, hiring Andrew Carrier from Everest Re for the role.
Andrew Carrier held the roles of Senior Vice President and President of Everest Advisors, UK and General Manager of European Operations for Everest Re.
He joins MS Amlin’s Lloyd’s unit into the newly created role of CUO, which he is expected to take up on 7th September, subject to regulatory approval, reporting directly to Tom Clementi, CEO of MS Amlin Underwriting Limited.
Carrier will take on responsibility for MS Amlin Underwriting Limited’s underwriting business, including the syndicate’s Reinsurance and Specialty Insurance divisions.
He will be tasked with reviewing the unit’s underwriting portfolio and strategy, aiming to reposit the business, where necessary, for future success.
Earlier in his career, Carrier was Active Underwriter for Kiln and CUO at Argo Group based in Bermuda.
The goal is to transform the MS Amlin Lloyd’s underwriting business into a highly successful specialty insurance and reinsurance firm, with Carrier’s oversight of underwriting.
The firm is simplifying its previous Co-CUO management structure of the MS Amlin Lloyd’s underwriting unit, dissolving it and the Co-CUOs for Specialty Insurance, Andrew Wright and Mark Clements, along with the CUO for Reinsurance, Phil Wooldridge, all stepping down from their roles on 30th September 2020.
Tom Clementi, CEO of MS AUL commented, “Following the changes in our structure which took effect at the beginning of this year, we have continued on our transformation plan to build a world-class (re)insurance business specialising in complex specialty and reinsurance risks. We have removed group and legacy MS Amlin plc structures, making our insurance companies leaner, stand-alone entities, strengthened our MS AUL governance and increased the expertise of our independent NEDs with the appointments of Johan Slabbert and Martin Hudson announced in May.
“A renewed approach to disciplined underwriting will be central to the success of our long-term strategy and the creation of Andrew’s role, and his appointment, is a natural next step in this process. I am delighted to welcome him to the MS AUL team. Andrew’s depth of leadership and industry experience, combined with his strong track record of successfully managing and delivering growth for high-profile (re)insurance business, will be integral to supporting MS AUL as we continue to create a more modern, relevant, profitable and client-focused business built around the expertise of our people.
“I would like to take this opportunity to thank Andrew, Mark and Phil, whose contributions to the business over the years have been significant. Their years of hard work and commitment have helped to position the business well for the future, and we are grateful that they will continue to serve on the MS AUL team until September to ensure a smooth transition for our brokers and insureds.”
