Here’s an interesting chart from Aon Benfield’s recent Reinsurance Market Outlook report. The chart shows the volume of catastrophe bonds issued by quarter since 2008. The first thing that jumps out is that despite the difficulties and issues which affected cat bond issuance during 2011, it was actually the most balanced year of issuance in this chart.
That could come as a surprise given the last year, despite us having all the data in our Deal Directory. Seeing it visualised like this makes it much clearer to see that actually 2011 saw reasonable issuance throughout each of the quarters of the year. It also makes it very clear how disappointing Q2 was after the bumper Q2 issuance in 2010. Had Q2 lived up to the expectations that the market had at this time last year, 2011 would have been a very good year for the cat bond market.
