Reinsurance firm Swiss Re’s sigma unit, which analyses and quantifies economic and insured losses from natural and man-made catastrophe events in its reports, has put an estimate on global catastrophe losses from the first-half of 2013 at $56 billion of economic losses and over $20 billion of insured losses.

Global law firm Sutherland Asbill & Brennan LLP has announced the addition of a capital markets partner, Brian G. Barrett who has experience of insurance-linked securities and the alternative reinsurance market, as it continues to build out its insurance and financial services practice in New York.

All sixteen member governments of the Caribbean Catastrophe Risk Insurance Facility (CCRIF) have renewed their hurricane and earthquake parametric insurance coverage for the 2013/2014 policy year which began on the 1st June. All members benefit from a premium discount for the upcoming policy year.

Recently, independent asset management group Schroders plc acquired another asset management firm Cazenove Capital Holdings Limited. The acquisition completed in July and with it Schroders expanded its interest in reinsurance-linked investments, which it began feeding with a 30% buy into an ILS manager in April this year.
